註釋
The principal aim of the present work was to apply suitably generalized principles and methods of structural analysis to problems of structural synthesis. A number of problems of modest size were solved to illustrate the principles and methods that were considered. These problems involved various structural forms (rods, trusses, beams, disks) and loading conditions of static, dynamic, or thermal type. As much of the literature on optimal structural design is concerned with stress constraints, compliance and displacement constraints were emphasized in the present work. Minimum cross-section constraints were also considered, because these constraints guard against the undesirable dropping out of indi vidual elements of the structure and are therefore essential for the application of finite element techniques and hence the extension of the methods described here to complex structures. Methods found to allow efficient optimal design were: The principle of minimum strain energy, a procedure to study the dependence of the optimal design of a structure on the prescribed compliances, and the principle of stationary mutual potential energy.
