註釋Discusses why and how "ethnic" antisemitism turned into racial antisemitism from the 1850s on, with a focus on the attitudes of French and Belgian Catholics. As an illustration, presents a detailed study of 80 accounts by French and Belgian pilgrims to the Holy Land between 1850-1939, especially their reactions to the Jews at the Wailing Wall. The accounts reveal the persistence of traditional religious stereotypes and expressions of racial antisemitism, in which religion plays an important role. Discusses the travel guides of the Franciscan Liévin de Hamme (1822-1898) and of Maurice Landrieux (1857-1926). Reflects on Catholic responses after the Shoah in France, expressing responsibility and repentance.
