註釋The objective of this study is to compare wood product attributes demanded by the Japanese market to those that can be profitably supplied by the British Columbia primary & secondary wood products sector. The study contains results of market research and an international trade-flow analysis to highlight areas of competitive advantage for that sector. It presents data on wood product production and trade flow for identified global producers & suppliers, identifies trends over the 1990s, and develops a methodology to incorporate such product detail into a trade-flow model with an initial focus on softwood lumber. The trade model is a spatial equilibrium model that estimates quantities traded, international prices, and trade flows among regions. Results are presented for a 1992 base case & a simulation that looks at how production, consumption, and trade change under a scenario of decreased Japanese demand for all softwood lumber products. The appendix contains trade-flow quantity & unit values charts for softwood lumber.
