Set in an Oxfordshire village in Edwardian England, Emmy explores the lives of four children: George, the son of the grocer; Selina, the only daughter of a widow; and Amanda and Emily, daughters of the lord of the manor. Although contact between George and the girls is difficult in the tightly structured village community, the silent understanding between George and Emily changes the children's lives and their outlook, and an event insignificant to the adults spells the end of their childhood and their innocence.
