My aim in this dissertation is to place the Doctrinal de los caualleros in its proper historical context. The dissertation begins with a critical survey of Cartagena scholarship, from the fifteenth century to the present, in an attempt to place the author in some sort of critical perspective. Chapter II attempts to determine precisely who read the text, as well as the way in which the text was received by its intended audience.
