註釋This collection of essays was originally to have been presented to Sir John Barry on his seventieth birthday in June 1973. However, forestalled from this course by Sir John's death in November 1969, the editors have instead presented the essays in honor of Sir John and they stand as a memorial to his distinguished life and work. Some of the essays in "Law and Crime" were completed before Sir John's death and these were either read to or by him; and others, such as the personal memoirs of Sir Eugene Gorman and Professor Zelman Cowen were evidently written after it. The topics covered in the essays are those that are compatible with Sir John's professed interests, and are tackled by authors of great merit.
