Requirements of Reductants for the Electric-smelting Industry
註釋The South African electric-smelting industry is analysed, the ferro-alloy industry being used as an example in an assessment of the present and future requirements of reductants. It is predicted that the ferro-alloy industry alone may require 4,1 million tonnes of reductant by the year 2000. The difficulty is to assess the relative proportions of the various reductants that will be used. A Char Committee has been formed with the object of identifying suitable coals for the production of char, identifying suitable charring processes (including consideration of byproducts), and determining the optimum characteristics of char for the various processes in the electric-smelting industry. A draft programme of co-ordinated national research and development is proposed.
