註釋
"Since the Renaissance there have been legions of great, dedicated Jesuits. Many are well known. First, of course, is St. Ignatius Loyola himself, the founder. Then, to mention a few others at random: St. Francis Xavier, St. Robert Bellarmine, the North American Martyrs, Jacques Marquette, Archbishop John Carroll, Jean Pierre de Caussade, Karl Rahner, John Courtney Murray, Teilhard de Chardin, Walter Ciszek, the list goes on and on. It is remarkable, however, how the Generals, successors to St. Ignatius, are today little known, often forgotten. Yet given the quasi military structure of the Order, each one of them played a major role in the development of missions, reaching out to new needs of the Church and world as well as fostering the overall esprit de corps of the Society of Jesus." "This little book is a modest attempt to remedy that oversight by presenting a portrait of each of the thirty three Generals along with a brief biography. Getting all the portraits, or at least ones with some historical and artistic merit, proved to be a more difficult task than expected. Yet despite the quaintness of some of these portraits, these are images of men who above all, were true leaders of true leaders. And anyone trying to trace their four century history and impact on the church and world at large, could do worse than use the lives and works of these Generals as guides along the way."--BOOK JACKET.
