註釋
Killing the Negative is a book of art and poetry. The drawings and paintings in the book were made by Joel Daniel Phillips in response to a series of photographs commissioned by the Farm Security Administration, a New Deal program formed in the wake of the Great Depression. The photographs were meant to document the brave struggle of Americans under economic hardship in both rural and urban areas and were taken by some of the great American photographers and artists of the 20th century: Walker Evans, Ben Shahn, and Marion Post Wolcott, among others. Roy Stryker, head of the FSA, had a peculiar method for editing the negatives; photos that were not going to be used in support of the FSA's mission were punched through with a hole-punch, producing the striking "killed negatives" of the title. Artist Joel Daniel Phillips has captured these photographs, along with the black hole at the center of them, in drawings and paintings, restoring the majesty of these images and the documentation of this time and place, while also retaining the mark of the editor, the void left by Stryker's hole punch. In response to these new artworks, poet Quraysh Ali Lansana has produced ekphrastic poems of his own and commissioned more by other poets, imbuing these new images with voice and lyrical depth.
