The research objectives of this report were to: -identify and document current understandings of the key terms 'communication' and 'literacy' -clarify and define key terms as they relate to the needs, understandings and expectations of the fields of communication and adult literacy -draw out the implications of key definitions for policy planning, curriculum development and curriculum documentation -illustrate the variety of provision and teaching practice in each field -make recommendations for policy development and the articulation of communication and adult literacy program provision in relation to curriculum documentation, program planning, professional development and classroom practice -inform the development of industry competency standards. Chapter 1 outlines the terms of reference, the scope of the project and the methodological procedures. Chapter 4 reports on developments in industry and workplace provision and considers the implications of literacy and communication skills provision for the development of industry competency standards. Chapter 2 considers current understandings of the key terms 'literacy' and 'communication' within each field. Chapter 3 reviews major policy and curriculum initiatives undertaken in each filed and reports on current provision. Chapter 4 reports on current teaching practices, including course design and procedures, methodology, content and teaching/ learning materials, resources and strategies. Chapter 5 outlines current professional development policy and practices in each field and discusses future needs and directions.
