Cleaner production describes an environmentally sound approach to industry activity. It is a board term that encompasses that some countries call waste minimization, waste avoidance, pollution prevention, but it also includes something extra. It refers to a mentality by which we produce our goods and services with the minimum environmental impact feasible under present technological and economic limits. The keynote paper defines cleaner production, outlines some of the cleaner production tools, briefly describes UNEP's Cleaner Production Programme and argues the case for industry to adopt the cleaner production approach.
