註釋The vocational and further educational needs of adult, rural-based immigrants were assessed, with particular attention to the special needs of women and the situation in South Australia (SA). A literature review showed that the educational needs of rural-based immigrants were diverse, although they all shared the problems of geographic and cultural isolation. The need to help them to progress from basic English language classes into mainstream Technical and Further Education (TAFE) classes was emphasized, and recognition of experiential learning and overseas qualifications was an issue. Data came from a short questionnaire sent to SA rural immigrant organizations, information from state and territory agencies, and telephone interviews with colleges providing services to rural-based immigrants. The following issues in rural-based immigrants' access and participation in TAFE were identified: (1) difficulties of obtaining qualified staff; (2) obtaining appropriate and sufficient resources; (3) class size restrictions; (4) assisting home tutors of isolated rural students; (5) provision beyond English-as-a-Second Language classes; (6) professional development for rural college staff; (7) appropriateness of courses; (8) special needs of English-speaking immigrants, immigrant women, and aged rural-based immigrants; (9) informing isolated rural-based immigrants about TAFE; (10) special support needs; and (11) systemic responses to needs. (Appendixes include 27 references, statistics regarding potential population to be served by TAFE in rural areas, and the questionnaire.) (YLB)
