Le Regard D'Autrui
註釋The title of this book is French, but the text is written in English. The author, CARL WEISSNER (1940-2012), was a multilingual writer, and the preeminent German translator of dissident writers such as William S. Burroughs, Charles Bukowski, J.G. Ballard, Ken Kesey, Allen Ginsberg, Bob Dylan, and Nelson Algren, having translated more than 100 books of theirs and others. He also wrote books of his own in both English and German. Carl was 71 when he died abruptly, late on the night of January 23, 2012, or in the early morning hours of Jan. 24. Exactly when he wrote "Le Regard d'Autrui" or why he gave a French title to a story written in English is unclear. What is crystal clear, however, is that "Le Regard d'Autrui" shows him to have been a master storyteller as magnetic as any of the celebrated writers he translated. -- JAN HERMAN
