註釋People often pursue many goals simultaneously in their lives. I hypothesized that people engaging in high-level construal would evaluate means to pursue a salient goal as higher in perceived utility (compared to means for an alternative goal). In the first study, I tested the effect of manipulated construal level on evaluations of means, demonstrating that, contrary to expectations, low-level construal lead to higher evaluations of perceived utility for means overall. In the second study, I expanded on the findings of the first to examine how means counter to long-term goals were evaluated across construal level. Participants did not demonstrate significant differences across construal level in their evaluations of means that advanced or countered an active or alternative goal. Interpretations of the unexpected results and future directions are discussed.
