Commonplace Book
註釋This commonplace book was owned by Jane Harriet (known as Harriet) Blechynden with contributions from her sister Lydia Emma (known as Emma) and her half sister Sally (known as Sarah). They are identified by an edge-mounted note signed 'RP' addressed to 'H & E Blechynden'. All three women were the daughters of Richard Blechynden, 1759-1822, an English surveyor, architect and occasional translator, resident in Calcutta. This commonplace book, including original poetry largely personal to Harriet and her family, was compiled during her time in England before she returned to Calcutta to marry Alexander Davidson Rice in 1825. The opening lines, 'A Whimsy written in a lady's album', are by Sarah who returned to England after her father's death in 1822. Four of the manuscript leaves include accomplished original illustrations with a further 25 loosely inserted. These include a number of illustrations from South Asia together with seven glazed leaves painted over with Japanese figures, presumably purchased as souvenirs.
