Daddy's Tattoos
註釋This book of graphic poetry is written for children between the ages of 8 - 17. In the same way Dr. Seuss and Shel Silverstein wrote fun, rhyming, and rhythmic verse for children that could also be serious and mature in its themes and provocations, my poetry encourages readers to think about issues of transformation, imagination, family, bullying, and the environment to name only some of the themes that run through the book. As a professor of education it is my understanding that children have the capacity for critical thought and are emotionally much more mature than many of the adults who are in charge of producing entertainment and educational experiences for children generally believe. If we provide children with the opportunity and the tools to think critically and reflect on their emotional responses to ideas and images, they will rise to the challenge. My poems are intended to be read aloud so that children and their parents can listen to the sounds of the language and think about how the sounds intersect with the meanings of the verse and their corresponding images. In the end, I wrote this book as a celebration of my daughter, but I quickly realized the universal nature of my love for her as a father. Hopefully other parents will find love and joy in sharing these poems with their children.
