Ralph Bunche, the Man and His Times
註釋Ralph Johnson Bunche was a distinguished black American whose career encompassed the roles of scholar, civil rights activist, statesman, and leader in the search for world peace and justice. This volume contains a brief chronological biography and essays analyzing the major facets of his life. Born in 1904 in Detroit and orphaned at the age of 13 in Albuquerque, he was reared in Los Angeles by his maternal grandmother, who insisted that he be taught college preparatory subjects, instead of the "practical" courses designed for black children. Subsequently his entire academic career was laced with "firsts" and honors. He was also the first black to receive the Ph.D. degree in political science from Harvard and the Nobel Peace Prize, for successfully negotiating an armistice between Israel and Egypt, Jordan, Syria, and Lebanon in 1950. ISBN 0-8419-1145-2: $36.50.
