註釋A collection of essays dealing with the subject of resistance and revolt in different periods of history and different parts of the world. Pp. 179-212, "The Confrontation - the Case of the 'Idol in the Temple'", discuss an attempt by the Emperor Caligula in 40 CE to install a statue of himself in the Temple in Jerusalem. Thousands of Jews gathered in protest and were prepared to die to prevent this act; this organization of resistance eventually led to the Jewish revolt in 67-70. Describes the first pogrom in Alexandria in 38 CE, encouraged by Flaccus, the Roman governor, ostensibly to punish the Jews for refusing to allow statues of the emperor in their synagogues, but actually using them as a scapegoat in order to find favor with the emperor and the people of Alexandria. Pp. 213-232, "On Resistance and Revolt" [appeared in "Mibifnim" 47 (1985)], discuss spiritual resistance in the Holocaust in the form of maintenance of human dignity despite the Nazis' attempts to dehumanize their victims, as well as physical resistance in the ghettos. Pp. 233-258, "Studies on 'Hechalutz Halochem'" [appeared in "Dapim le-heker tekufat ha-Shoah" 4 (1986)], discuss extant issues of the clandestine Polish journal published by the Jewish youth movement in the Kraków ghetto.
