註釋Discusses the rescue of Jews, including converts to Christianity, by Franz Kaufmann, Helene Jacobs, and their associates in Berlin between 1941-43 in Berlin. Kaufmann, a Christian of Jewish origin, was dismissed in December 1935 from his position as a juridical consultant to the municipality. In 1940 he decided to help persecuted Jews and, together with Helene Jacobs, he established a network of volunteers. In 1941, when Jews were forced to wear the yellow star, it became evident that many members of the Churches, mainly the Confessing Church, were non-Aryans. Kaufmann aided both Jews and Christians of Jewish origin. In February 1943 the ca. 15,000 "Mischlinge" who remained in the city, living in mixed marriages and performing forced labor, were threatened with deportation. Kaufmann's group helped many of them go into hiding, and ca. 1,500 survived. Each hidden person was assisted by at least ten helpers, many of them members of the Confessing Church. Among the volunteers were also clergy from other Churches. Kaufmann himself became a member of the Confessing Church in 1943. In August 1943 the group was denounced and eight members were arrested. Kaufmann was imprisoned in Sachsenhausen and killed in February 1944.
