In proposing some viable model for the development o indigenous Southeast Asian database (cooperatively through national libraries as national focal points, homogenous clusters or matrix of libraries and institutions at national, regional and/or international levels, and jointly with several prerequisites are delineated: research information needs; practicability of capturing data and information to create databases; commonality and compatibility in language, in thesauri system, in database design and structure, in software and operating systems, and in user interfaces; telecommunications capacity and services such as Internet facilities; appropriate IT storage and retrieval software and hardware such as CD-ROM and optical disks; user friendliness; related education and training; organizational and marketing skills;development of a critical mass of indigenous database producers; database security; and copyright issues.
