註釋
States that, besides the question of the guilt or innocence of Captain Dreyfus, the Catholic press in Italy held almost unanimously that the Affair was the expression of an anti-patriotic and anti-Catholic conspiracy of Jews, Masons, Protestants, Anarchists, and Socialists, as well as proof of the excessive power acquired by Jews thanks to emancipation. Through the use of traditional anti-Jewish stereotypes, the Church attempted to regain a lost consensus in a society strongly influenced by liberalism and anti-clericalism.
