His letter to Leonora of Toledo--not mentioned by Mario Praz in Studies in seventeenth-century imagery (2d edition), or by John Landwehr in his bibliographies of emblem books--offers a good explanation of the theory behind devices, a subject on which Ammirato was considered an expert.
