The best provenance overall was fromNipissing, Ont., but several western Ontario and Quebec sourcesalso performed well. Based on these results, it is suggestedthat early selection is not effective in black spruce, that localand regional sources are not necessarily superior to distantsources, but that specific provenances can be selected at age 15for use in improvement programmes.
