Greatly influenced by George Wishart, who was burned at the stake for heterodoxy in 1546, Knox became the spokesman for the Reformation in Scotland. This is a good book that covers the major events of Knox's life without being too long and laborious. It would be difficult to write a book about John Knox without bringing in the life of Mary Stuart, the only legitimate child of King James V. of Scotland, who died when she was a mere infant. This book tells of her marriage to Francis, Dauphin of France, and of her short time as Queen before his death of a brain tumor. Her return to be Queen of Scotland by what she believed was a "divine right," was clouded by heavy mists, both literally and figuratively. One will read of the political intrigue involving Mary, a Roman Catholic, her Protestant nobles, and of course her inevitable collision with John Knox.
