Does the Presence of an Older Adult Household Member Increase Household Catastrophic Health Expenditure in WHO SAGE Countries?
註釋Two-thirds of older adults (OA) aged 60+ years live in low- and middle- income countries that lack good public health facility and social security. OAs age 60 are expected to live for 20 more years till death. The extended life is generally spent with chronic morbidity, needing frequent health visit and longer hospitalization. These together result in catastrophic health expenditure (CHE) in households having OA(s). Using data from Study on global ageing and adult health (WHO-SAGE), our study shows that presence of OA member increases the incidence of CHE in WHO-SAGE countries. Households with 1 or more OA are 1.16, 1.23, 1.59, 1.99, and 2.49 times as likely as households having no OA member to incur CHE in India, Ghana, Mexico, China, and Russia, respectively. Health insurance is protective against CHE in Mexico, and reduces the intensity of CHE in India and Mexico. Public health system must be strengthened to prevent CHE in households having OA (s). The Governments in low- and middle- income countries must also focus on old age social security for OAs.
