Fear of Crime and Gender Roles
註釋Gender has been clearly established as one of the most important predictors of fear of crime. What has yet to be teased out is what comprises this predictor. While the gender gap research mainly focuses on biological sex, this study explores gender as an independent construct using the Bem Sex Role Inventory. Additionally, this study integrated a multitude of measures deemed relevant in the literature and thoroughly explored four aspects of fear and worry of crime: sex, gender roll, perceived risk, and the shadow fear of sexual assault. Strong support was found for the existence of a gender gap, stemming more from biological sex than from gender role. Perceived risk was identified as a significant indicator of both fear and worry of crime. Last, the 'shadow of sexual assault' hypothesis received strong support in every dependent measure.
