Timothy Taylor Jr. Letter
註釋This collection is a 4-page handwritten letter written on 24 June 1813 near Fort Norfolk in Virginia by Timothy Taylor Jr. to his father Colonel Timothy Taylor Sr. Taylor wrote an account of the actions that occurred on 22 June 1813, known as the Battle of Craney Island. With Taylors limited knowledge he described a British attack that consisted of “8 Frigates and several tenders”, he recounted the British method of attack which was throwing rockets. US soldiers fought back with their cannon and sank 4 British barges. Several British soldiers were killed in the action and 80 British soldiers deserted or were taken prisoner. Through later accounts when more information was available Colonel Beatty wrote a report to his commanding officer, Brigadier General of State Militia, Robert B. Taylor (24 March 1774-13 April 1834). In his report he listed, 200 British casualties, 40 deserters, mostly French and 22 prisoners. Though there were no casualties during the battle among US soldiers, Taylor writes one soldier was killed due to a magazine explosion. The letter is very fragile and torn in multiple places causing there to be missing sections to the letter. The letter is transcribed.
