The thermal response of a number of thermocouple assemblies was determined. Two sizes of thermocouple wire and a mineral insulated thermocouple were tested in combination with inconel or porcelain protective tubes. The hot junction of the thermocouple projected past the end of the projective tube in some cases, while in others was stopped short of the end of the tube. Testing was conducted in accordance with the requirements of the draft of AS1530, Part 4 and time constants were accordingly determined. The implications of this work for the current draft are considered.
