The sample is decomposed with hydrochloric and nitric acids. Lanthanum nitrate solution is added to an aliquot portion of the sample, and the solution is aspirated into a nitrous oxide and acetylene flame. The absorption or emission is determined, and the strontium concentration is calculated by comparison with standard solutions treated in a similar manner.
