註釋
My story is about a kid who is beat down for being one of the "dumb kids" because well, he can't read, he can't do a lot of stuff. But what no one knows and not even the kid knows is that he has this untapped genius. The kid is a wiz at visual thinking and visual problem solving, but no one notices it. The kid grows up, drops out of high school-so now he's a big failure.
But his story takes lots of twists, and one day he ends up at a Harvard interview. There, he tells an amazing story, the story about his life. And he gets in That's where he ends up but the story is also about the imaginative way in which he observes and experiences life. The book raises questions about the nature of intelligence, imagination, and like this unlikely hero, seeing the things that everyone else misses. Sort of a Flowers for Algernon minus the tragic decline, meets the visual quirks of Amelie, meets Good Will Hunting.
The book chronicles my path starting out as a kid who could barely read and ending up at one of the best universities in the world. Personally, I don't think the story is interesting for where it ends, but how I got there.
As a person with a learning disability, the book is also reflection on the way I think-its limitations and its unique strengths. My disability makes it hard for me to read and write. So you see, my first reason for wanting to write this book is that people like me are not supposed to write books. However, the deeper reason for writing this book is my hope to reach people in similar situations-those who struggle in school, confront failure, or cope with feelings of inadequacy. I think my story challenges predominant attitudes about education and the way in which students are supposed to succeed. My story might change the way some people think about their own life.
