Looking Forward, Looking Black
註釋This book examines race, representation and the contested cultural construction of identity. The black body has been everywhere in evidence in painting, film, photography -- even cookie jars and lawn ornaments -- and at the same time been rendered invisible. The artists in this exhibition, beginning with Maria Howard Weeden's 1895 portraits of ex-slaves, reflect upon the vicissitudes of the representation of the black body over the century. The artists whose work has been selected include: Emma Amos, Romare Howard Bearden, Michael Ray Charles, Robert Colescott, Renee Cox, Leslie Dill, Leon Golub, Renee Green, Lyle Ashton, Isaac Julien, Peter Williams, Kara Walker, and others.
