註釋"Out of the Darkness" was written with the intention of entertaining and informing, and should be considered "based on a true story". The dramatic format in which it was written may classify it as historical fiction, but for the purposes of this book, we, the authors, did not want to present it as a dry documentary. Using every piece of information available, we have filled small gaps in the story with likely characters and scenarios; with the wealth of information we've accumulated over the years, it's very likely we're not far off. Letters, newspaper articles, and conversations with Mary Ellen's descendants support much of the creative license taken here. Where dates are used, they are accurate. We assume no responsibility for errors, inaccuracies, omissions or any other inconsistency herein. Some fictitious characters were introduced for the purposes of story continuity, but they do not distort the factual information presented. Any slights against people or organizations are unintentional, and any resemblance of fictional characters to actual living persons is entirely coincidental.
