註釋Awestruck by the magnificence of the universe, David enquired, "What is man that you even think about him, that you actually care for him?" (Psalm 8:4) "Look deep within yourself," God seemed to be saying, "and you will find the answer." David would not have known then that the average human comprises about 7 billion, billion, billion atoms, that there are around 100 trillion cells in the human body and as many atoms in a single cell; moreover, that this deceptively simple organism, the cell, is an automated factory of phenomenal sophistication capable of transforming its raw material into something of dazzling wonder, housing the enigma of mind and consciousness. He was apparently unaware, at least until that revelatory moment that this, the supreme masterpiece of creation, is also imprinted with the Divine essence, within touching distance of the all sufficient Eternal Absolute and designed for participation in the timeless purposes of Love. You may also have gazed in awe, as I have done on so many occasions, at the indescribable splendour of the universe. Well it seems that God has been telling us all along to turn our attention inwards on ourselves, to something infinitely more wonderful.I was raised to believe that the Bible is the final authority on almost every subject and it was only when I started thinking for myself that I began to question some of the anomalies and contradictions on which my faith was based. For example, how a God of love could instruct one nation to slaughter entire communities in such a barbaric manner as more closely resembles what is now generally referred to as genocide, or invent a state of everlasting torture for the purpose of punishing billions of people, some of whose only crime was the misfortune of having been born into the wrong family or culture or simply at the wrong time. At the same time I was aware of the Bible's approbation of such civilised values as advocate justice for the oppressed, hospitality toward strangers, provision for the poor, care for orphans and widows and even going to the extraordinary length of embracing the enemy as one might do to a neighbour. Nevertheless, given its considerably diminished authority, at least from my point of view, I began to question how it was possible to know with any reasonable assurance whether its fundamental assertions could be considered reliable.
