"Studies investigating the Third Reich have devoted a great deal of attention to the massive and complex SS organization heading by Heinrich Himmler. By virtue of its notoriety as the ultimate manifestation of applied Nazism, research on the SS has concentrated on its criminal, ideological and military aspects ... Prior to the outbreak of World War II, [the General (Allgemeine)-SS] formed the largest portion of the whole SS organization. The General-SS formed a reminder of what the Order had been prior to the Machtergreifung -- a body of amateur 'political soldiers' at the 'special disposal' of the Movement. After the attainment of power, special formations -- the Verfuegungstruppe and Wachtverbaende (later Totenkopfverbaende)
