註釋Asaria was formerly the chief rabbi of the postwar British Zone and, later, the regional rabbi of Niedersachsen. His book deals with the functioning of the "Landesrabbinat" in the region as well as in the major cities throughout the centuries. Pp. 491-537, "Hashoah - die Vernichtung", trace the rise of antisemitism in Niedersachsen in the 20th century and the fate of Niedersachsen's Jews in the Holocaust. In 1938, 4,800 Jews lived in the region's largest city, Hannover. In October 1938, 484 Hannover Jews of Polish origin were expelled to Poland, including the family of Herschel Grynszpan. In 1941 ghettoization of the remaining Jewish families began, followed by deportations to Riga. A total of 2,400 Jews were deported; very few survived. Discusses, also, the fate of the Jews in smaller cities, such as Lüneburg and Wesermünde-Bremerhaven, and in the districts of Aurich, Osnabrück, Hildesheim, Göttingen, Braunschweig, and Oldenburg.
