註釋
This is a historical story of a young man ( James Whelpdale), who was Exiled to Australia for the theft of a pair of boots off the back of the bootmakers door. He was sentenced to 10 years in Van Diemen's Land and transported in the 1840s. He spent time as an Exile working as a Shepherd and later Manager on a sheep property in Van Diemen's land and travelled to Victoria to work on an agricultural property that the same owner was just developing. He obtained work at a hotel being built near Geelong and met up with Mary Graham who was quite young and had just arrived from England as part of a scheme to send out Irish Orphan Girls to become the wives of some of the young men who had already arrived. At that time there was only one female for every nine men and the government of the day were looking to populate the country. They worked together with others at the hotel and heard news of the goldrush in Ballarat. They married when Mary was 16 1⁄2 years old and James was 26. They married at the St. Mary's Church in Geelong and travelled to the goldfields where they had moderate success. Their first daughter was born in Ballarat and died at childbirth. Mary and James bought land at Learmonth in the first auction of land in that area (56 acres), and set up a farm, they later built a large hotel on the property and produced a family. This story is about the hard times, the development of the land, and the difficulties experienced at that time.
