An attempt is made to integrate field and laboratory (geochemistry, petrology and fluid inclusion) studies, to produce a model for the development of hydrothermal activity in the St. Just district. -- The surface geology between Botallack and Levant Mine, and the sub-surface geology at Levant Mine, is described . The field data are presented on three maps (VOLUME 2) -- New chemical and mineralogical data are presented for samples of thermally metamorphosed and metasomatised basalts and pelites, and hydrothermally altered pelites, basalts and granites. -- The results of a fluid inclusion study of several paragenetically significant ore-gangue samples are also presented. -- The last section of the thesis comprises a review of the inclusion data for S.W. England, the presentation of new inclusion data for several specific mineral deposits from the province, and a discussion of the nature of the Cornubian batholithic hydrothermal system.
