Abstract: "The problems of managing software projects grow as the projects increase in scale, complexity, duration. Project and configuration management tools seek to alleviate the problems. However, an ad hoc collection of tools provides only a partial solution. As part of the SAGA (Software Automation, Generation and Administration) project, we investigated software configuration management and project management and constructed two systems, CLEMMA and PROMAN, that reflected our current understanding of the problems involved. The lessons learned from this work have led us to design a software development environment that incorporates integrated automated support for configuration and project management.
