Annotation. Language is critical for learning, underpinning everything that goes on at school. From the beginning, children use language to communicate: to tell stories, to pass on information, to question. Teachers use language to chat, explain, instruct, direct, discipline and reason. Language is necessary to interact socially and language is necessary for formal learning. If an apparently alert, capable student has difficulty with understanding or using spoken language and consequently has difficulty with reading, understanding and producing written language, it is essential to consider that they may have a language learning disability. One in Eleven identifies language learning disabled students and offers suggestions for teaching and learning strategies to address this difficulty in various school contexts, especially in subject areas. The emphasis on modifying the curriculum and employing explicit teaching strategies for these students is supported by many case-study examples. Practical recommendations are made through the use of photocopiable materials.
