The Fleming family lived there for 70 years, from 1849, breeding cattle, horses and poultry. John Wood Fleming combined this with unwavering duty to Council affairs and as a JP and local magistrate. For 52 years, from 1867 to 1919, he served on the Brunswick Council, including four times as mayer, thus gaining the title of: 'The Grand Old Man of Brunswick Municipal Council'.
