The Appeal of the Hunger Games to Reluctant Readers in an Alternative Education Environment
註釋This thesis examines how Suzanne Collins' novel, The Hunger Games, can be used in the high school English classroom to engage reluctant readers in literature because they relate to it on many levels. One of the ways this novel appeals to teenagers is the dystopian setting, which is an extrapolation of some of the issues in modern society. Also, many reluctant readers enjoy the elements of the plot, including the fast-paced action and romantic complications. Finally, many students relate to specific characteristics of the protagonist, often because of the connections between the lives of today's adolescents and the main character. High school teachers can encourage reluctant readers to engage with literature by providing young adult dystopian literature, which can lead to the students becoming open to enjoying reading other literature as well.
