It follows a family from the Middle Ages in Holland to the Twentieth Century in Oklahoma. The family chooses a unique faith--Anabaptist-Mennonite--and for that reason they are hounded across Europe by the political and religious establishment. The historical details have been carefully researched, however most of the characters are fictionalized. Each character is a storyteller speaking in the first person. Dialogue is written without quotation marks and identification of the persons speaking must be determined from the words spoken.
