Sydney Smith
註釋Sydney Smith George William E.Russell Sydney Smith was an English wit, writer, Anglican cleric and an outstanding representative of the English liberal tradition. This book compiles much of his work through letters, poems and writings. Starting as an impoverished village curate he went to Edinburgh as a tutor and cofounded the Edinburgh Review, In 1803 he moved to London where he was introduced to The Holland House circle where he quickly became an admired and popular member. Apart from his letters, his writings are not widely known but Mr Auden places him alongside Swift, Shaw and Hooker to be ranked very high by any literary standard. This generous selection gives the full flavor of his mind and Mr Auden has prefaced it with a stimulating introduction on the individual and his liberal mind. Content includes: The Peter Plymley Letters, Methodism, Persecuting Bishops, What is a Puseyite (poem), Letters to Archdeacon Singleton, Letter to Lord Lansdowne, Letter to Mrs. Beach, Advice to Parishioners, A Little Moral Advice, A Nice Person, Too Much Latin and Greek, Female Education, Letter to Francis Jeffrey (extract), and many more. From Sydney Smith's published works, which have been little known except for the letters, Mr. W. H. Auden has chosen a generous sampling in a variety of forms. The Selected Writings of Sydney Smith provides an enjoyable introduction to a witty and engaging writer who has much to say to our times.
