At a time when women writers were still uncommon, her work spanned two decades and ranged from anonymous pieces of travel writing to poetry, romantic fiction, childrens literature, and parenting advice. She rose to fame, however, not through popular literature but through tracts, novels, and articles on the social and living conditions of Native Americans after a century of dealing with the U.S. government and American settlers.
