A method and apparatus for monitoring the free cyanide concentration of a process solution are provided. The arrangement is one in which a plug of process solution is introduced, by means of a suitable valve and flow path arrangement, into a carrier stream which is buffered to a pH of greater than 9,4 and preferably about 10,5 to 11,0, and the composite stream, after passing through a mixing zone, is passed over a cyanide ion selective membrane. The fluctuations in the potential of the electrode are monitored and compared to those generated by a similar plug of standard solution which may be introduced into the same or a different carrier stream. The comparison allows for arriving at a quantitative figure for the cyanide content of the process solutions.
