This volume covers the same period in Van Gogh's career as the first two volumes in the series of Van Gogh's drawings. This was a difficult time in Van Gogh's life, during which he was trying to establish himself as an artist - with little success, and against the wishes of his father. It is his depictions of the Brabant landscape and the harsh life led by peasants there that characterizes his oeuvre of the period.
