The story is warm and offers some empathy to pre-school children and their parents. The pattern of the story follows the last few days before a child starts school. Each day the child offers a reason why she can't start school: she won't be able to use the toilet; her baby sister will be lonely and so forth. Each time, her mother reassures her by explaining the realities of school life in a positive and often humorous way.
