註釋Upon its initial publication in 1874, "Les diaboliques" was immediately declared a danger to public morality, and all the copies of the book were seized on the orders of the Ministry of Justice. Such scandal guaranteed immediate success; D'Aurevilly's evident mastery of prose fiction and his influence on later writers has since established the book as a classic of French letters.
