Charles Sylvester (1774-1828) was christened at Sheffield, Yorkshire, England, the son of Joseph and Sarah Mills Sylvester. Largely a self-educated man, he was a civil engineer, a scientist, a writer of scientific and technical writings and a poet. He and his wife, Sarah Dixon Sylvester (d. 1822), were apparently childless.
