註釋
The Love Suicides at Amijima, classic Bunraku (puppet theatre) play by Chikamatsu Monzaemon, written and performed about 1720 as Shinjū ten no Amijima. Like most of Chikamatsu’s more than 20 love-suicide dramas, it was based on an actual event, the outcome of the brothel system. These works made love suicides so popular that they were outlawed, and any survivor was charged with murder.Jihei, a paper merchant, falls in love with the 19-year-old prostitute Koharu, but he cannot afford to buy her release from her brothel. Though the lovers’ exchanges are amusing in early passages of the play, the complicated tensions of duty and desire lead to a tragic decision: since their inflexible society makes their love impossible, Jihei and Koharu will seek to be joined in the afterlife. --text from Encyclopedia Britannica (see link(
